This monthly series highlights staff, faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and researchers throughout the College of Science and the tremendous work they are doing to advance the college alongside their peers.

College of Science: What led you to the University of Arizona and your current role in the College of Science?

Debra: To be completely honest, the weather. Some may say it’s extreme, however, I am born and raised in Chicago. A wonderful city with a blossoming springtime, nothing like summertime Chi and the beautiful colors of fall. But, then there is winter. I decided one day I was over the harsh winters and started my search.

COS: What is your favorite aspect of academic advising?

Debra: I have almost 20 years advising experience and enjoy helping students navigate their academic journeys. Gaining their trust and building those relationships is important and rewarding.

COS: What advice do you lend to a student when they face a challenging situation or crossroads?

Debra: I make sure to actively listen and empathize with the student’s situation and let them know they are not alone first and foremost. I like to talk through different scenarios and possible outcomes with the student to allow them to see that every obstacle is not detrimental. I like to think I am helping students build resilience while encouraging them to acknowledge their strengths and respect their own vulnerabilities and give themselves some grace. That, yes, this situation is tough right now, but you will get through it. Let’s create a plan to push through. There are a number of resources available to help you succeed.

COS: What is your proudest career or academic achievement to date?

Debra: I’d have to say moving to Tucson is my proudest career moment. I took a leap of faith and relocated 1700 miles without my family (My husband and youngest have now relocated). It was both scary and exhilarating at the same time. It was what I needed to do to be a better Debra.

COS: Outside of the office, what are some of your favorite hobbies or activities?

Debra: I am pretty easy going. I really enjoy spending time with my family. I am the biggest fan of my three kids. My youngest is an athlete and you can find me on the sidelines of every meet, game and match. I also love knitting and other crafts. I usually have more than one project going on at any given time.
