Each semester, the College of Science recognizes outstanding graduating seniors from each of its departments. Today's award recipient is Roswell 'Roz' Roberts from the Department of Hydrology & Atmospheric Sciences.

College of Science: Why did you choose your area of study?

I’ve been interested in both Astronomy and Atmospheric Science since as far back as I can remember. So when I first joined the University of Arizona I started studying Astronomy. Later, after gaining both a minor in Physics and Mathematics, I decided to pursue my secondary passion of Atmospheric Science. Now, two and a half years later I am proud to call myself an Atmospheric Scientist and an Astronomer. I’m also very happy to have been accepted into the University of Arizona’s Masters program in Atmospheric Sciences. I can’t wait to continue pursuing my love of weather, and hopefully in a year or so I will have the pleasure of calling myself a Master of Atmospheric Science.

COS: Tell us about a class or research project you really enjoyed.

I think the class that I’ve enjoyed the most would actually be one that I have been taking over the last 16 weeks. That class is Weather Analysis and Forecasting II. WAF2 has been so fun for me! I’ve always loved extreme weather and specifically thunderstorms and supercells, so being able to take a class that specifically covers these concepts has been absolutely delightful. If I had to give a rating for this class I’d give it a 10/10 as anything less would be a travesty!

COS: What is one specific memory from your time at UA that you'll cherish forever?

One memory that I will cherish forever is getting to meet my significant other over our shared love of and degrees in Astronomy. I don’t really think I can come up with a more cherished memory than that!

COS: What are you most proud of having accomplished in your time at UA?

I think I’m most proud of having completed both my degree in Astronomy and my degree Atmospheric Science. It feels a bit weird to almost be done but I am so proud of myself for making it this far and sticking with it over the past five years.

COS: What is next for you after graduation?

As I mentioned before I will be continuing my education to get my Masters in Atmospheric Science. After that I hope to get my PhD, but let’s focus on the Masters for now.
