Each semester, the College of Science recognizes outstanding graduating seniors from each of its departments. Today's award recipient is Amanda Adams from the Department of Molecular & Cellular Biology.

College of Science: Why did you choose your area of study?

I first fell in love with all things science in my biotech classes in high school. I was fortunate enough to have been able to learn lab techniques and dive deep into the field of research. This lead me to molecular and cellular biology, a major where I was able to use this interest for a wide variety of career options and gain research experience.

COS: Tell us about a class or research project you really enjoyed.

I have been in the Criag Laboratory where we study reproductive toxicology since my sophomore year and have loved all the projects I have been able to work on. I am especially proud of my project on the effects of wood fire smoke exposure on ovarian reserve. This project looked at how smoke exposure experienced while firefighting can impact female fertility using mice as model organisms. It was incredible to be able to advance what is known specifically about female firefighting occupational hazards as this area is not well researched.

COS: What is one specific memory from your time at UA that you'll cherish forever?

Freshman year my roommate and I went up to Mt. Lemmon for the day and happened to stumble upon the annual Oktoberfest. We decided to stop and check it out and rode the ski lift to the top. I will never forget those views. Now as a senior, we went back this past October with more friends and had a great time dancing and going up the lift again. I feel like this moment represents my experiences at UA and in Tucson. You never really know what is coming next but most of the time it becomes a great story and new friendships.

COS: What are you most proud of having accomplished in your time at UA?

I am most proud of the memories I have made alongside my academics. I am extremely proud of myself for holding a 4.0 GPA all four years and for being named as a 2024 Udall scholar in the Native American Healthcare category but most of all that I have been able to enjoy and fully experience college while achieving these academic merits.

COS: What is next for you after graduation?

After graduation I will be attending the University of Arizona to complete a master's in Genetic Counseling. I hope to specialize in fertility and prenatal genetic counseling to help support the women and families facing infertility.
