What made you choose your science major at this school?
- I'm drawn to this major because it guides me in the right direction to becoming a medical speech-language pathologist. With this profession I will be able to make a meaningful difference for patients facing illness or injury, helping them recover communication and swallowing abilities that are important for communication and quality of life.
How hard were the intro science classes compared to high school?
- I feel like the introduction classes were relatively the same from the high school I went to. The only thing that I needed to get used to was the amount of students there were when attending office hours.
Do professors actually teach, or are most classes taught by TAs?
- Most professors teach the classes.
How easy is it to get help if you’re struggling in a science class?
- Pretty easy, there are always office hours and many other resources provided by UofA
When can students start doing research (freshman year or later)?
- Freshman year
How did you get involved in research or labs?
- Through the Speech, Language, & Hearing Sciences website. I was able to find a lab that I was interested in and email a professor about my interest.
Are research opportunities competitive or fairly accessible?
- Within my major, research opportunities are fairly accessible. Professors are always interested in having more student involvement.
Do students get paid for research or is it mostly for credit?
- It is mostly credit, but there are opportunities to work under a grant.
What does a typical week look like for a science major?
- Attending lectures from Monday to Friday. Participating in research for about 10 hours a week. Going to an on campus cafe to
How much time do you actually spend studying?
- It depends on the week. Most weeks I will spend at least an hour studying and reserve the weekends for extra studying.
What’s the hardest science class you’ve taken—and why?
- My Physiology classes because there was a lot of memorization that needed to be done.
What do you wish you had known before coming here?
- I wish I would have known about all the tutoring resources that are offered within the college of science before starting.
What clubs and/or organizations are you involved with?
- ASEMS, National Student Speech Language Hearing Association, FUERZA (SLHS)
What are your future plans after graduation?
- I plan to apply to a masters program to become a speech pathologist.
