This spring, the College of Science recognized 12 outstanding seniors for their contributions in and out of the classroom. Erin Schuette is this semester's recipient from Chemistry & Biochemistry!

The College of Science caught up with Erin to learn more about her experiences at the University of Arizona and what is on the horizon after graduation.

Why did you choose to study in your specific department/major?

In high school, I had equal interests in biology, physics, and chemistry, and I thought that biochemistry was the perfect major to explore them all, with focused applications on the mechanisms of physiologic processes.

Tell me about a class or research project you really enjoyed.

One class I thoroughly enjoyed in my major was the Biochemical Lab Techniques course. Dr. Sacoman was one of the most challenging professors I had, but she made me want to work harder and truly understand all of the theory behind basic lab techniques. After her course, I really saw the applications to my thesis project and had a bigger appreciation for the experiments I conducted.

What is one specific memory from your time at UA that you'll cherish forever?

My favorite memory of college was driving to Mount Lemmon at 4am to watch the sunrise at the end of my first semester. I had just made a new group of friends, who have remained my closest friends up until graduation, and it was the first time I truly felt that my decision to attend UofA was meant to be. I was finding new adventures, even if they scared me a little, and fun opportunities the college offered that I had never envisioned before.

What are you most proud of having accomplished in your time at UA?

I am most proud of my dedication to mentorship during my time on campus. I had so many wonderful experiences with advisors, peers, and TAs bringing vital assistance to my student journey, and I knew I needed to pass this wisdom on to more students. As a CBC peer mentor, College of Science and CBC Ambassador, and Chemistry preceptor, I have supported so many incredible students in the same way that I was.

What is next for you after graduation?

This July, I will continue my journey towards becoming a physician at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Tucson. I am so excited to continue my education in a place where I have built such a strong community. Once a wildcat, always a wildcat!
