Each semester, the College of Science recognizes outstanding graduating seniors from each of its departments. Today's award recipient is Kelly Salb from the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology.

College of Science: Why did you choose your area of study?

I initially chose to pursue this degree due to a lifelong interest in living things and a drive to understand how they work.

COS: Tell us about a class or research project you really enjoyed.

A research project I really enjoyed was one that took place in the Worobey lab. I took the lead in making ‘in-house’ lateral flow assay test kits, by splicing together various parts of commercially available test kits to create a new kit on which to run new types of assays, which we could not run on commercially available kits. I was then able to see my innovation pan out when these ‘in-house’ kits worked!

COS: What is one specific memory from your time at UA that you'll cherish forever?

One memory from my time here at UofA is sitting on campus, watching the birds and lizards run around and do their thing. I always did this to relax before exams, and it was so good for my mental health. During my time here at UofA, I am most proud of the connections I have made. Not only did I meet so many fellow students with whom I’ve formed lifelong friendships, I also have formed strong connections with faculty as well. These connections are what got me my current research position, and what have earned me the title of Outstanding Senior as well! After graduation, I plan on continuing to work in the Worobey Lab until I move to Phoenix. From there, life is a little up in the air, but I have confidence that whatever path I follow will be one I was meant to take.

COS: What is next for you after graduation?

After graduation, I plan on continuing to work in the Worobey Lab until I move to Phoenix. From there, life is a little up in the air, but I have confidence that whatever path I follow will be one I was meant to take.
