Message from Dean Carmie Garzione - October 2024
Dear College of Science Community,
I hope that you are enjoying the fall semester. I’d like to take this newsletter opportunity to celebrate some of the remarkable academic achievements and developments within our college. Your dedication and hard work are truly making a difference, and I’m excited to share some highlights that reflect our collective efforts.
The U.S. News & World Report rankings recognize the exceptional quality of our undergraduate and graduate programs, with seven College of Science programs ranked in the top 15 nationally. This achievement underscores our commitment to excellence in both education and research and shines a light on the outstanding efforts of our faculty, staff, and students.
Additionally, I’m pleased to share that Forbes has ranked our online Biology degree one of the best in the nation. This recognition is a testament to the hard work of our faculty and staff in delivering quality education that meets the diverse needs of students here in Arizona and across the nation.
In August, the College of Science proudly welcomed five of the twenty statewide Flinn Scholars to our community. These outstanding first year students bring exceptional talent and promise to our college, and we look forward to seeing their academic and personal growth in the years to come. You can learn more about this exceptional group of students here.
The Department of Physics recently celebrated the opening of a renovated teaching lab space designed to enhance undergraduate education and foster research collaboration. This state-of-the-art facility, which received financial support from the Provost Investment Fund (PIF), will provide Physics students in introductory classes with engaging hands-on experiences that allow students to experiment and collaborate with one another.
Lastly, I want to acknowledge the outstanding faculty and staff members who received the 2024 Teaching & Advising Awards: Adi Adiredja, Kate Bunton, Samyukta Krishnamurthy, Melanie Lipton, Jon Njardarson, and Lisa Rezende. Their commitment to student success and excellence in teaching embodies core values of the College of Science.
Let’s continue to build on these successes. Thank you for your passion and dedication to our college and its mission. Together, we are making a significant impact on educational and research opportunities at the University of Arizona.
Sincerely,
Carmie Garzione
Dean, College of Science
