Message from Dean Carmala Garzione - June 2023
Dear students, colleagues, and friends,
I hope your summer is going well!
Since our last newsletter, the College of Science celebrated nearly 1,500 graduating undergrad, masters, and PhD students during our convocation ceremony inside McKale Center. It was an inspirational day to see and hear the journeys students have made during their time at the University of Arizona. I would especially like to thank our two guest speakers for their messages to our students, faculty, staff, and guests – Dr. Cheri Blauwet, Associate Professor in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School, and Vanessa Addison, who was selected this past semester as the College of Science’s Outstanding Senior. Congratulations, Wildcats!
Earlier this week, the University of Arizona culminated its yearlong Beyond Juneteenth celebration by welcoming two advocates, educators, and activists who are continuing the legacy of their iconic families - Bernice King, daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., and Ilyasah Shabazz, award-winning author, educator, and daughter of Malcolm X. The Beyond Juneteenth initiative at UArizona promotes awareness of the holiday and its significance within the struggle for racial justice in the United States. I encourage everyone to learn more about the Beyond Juneteenth celebration and the remarkable people behind the efforts at the University of Arizona.
Save the dates for the 2024 College of Science Lecture Series! We will return to Centennial Hall on Wednesday, February 7 for the first of four lecture presentations by College of Science faculty. Following presentations will be on Wednesday, February 14, 21 and 28. I look forward to sharing more information about the series with you in the coming months.
Wishing all of you a great summer.
Sincerely,
Carmie Garzione
Dean, College of Science
