Message from Dean Carmala Garzione - April 2023
Dear students, colleagues, and friends,
We are in the homestretch of the spring semester, and I am so proud of the work happening across the College of Science. Classrooms are full of students and laboratories are buzzing with research. I would like to wish everyone an excellent conclusion to your semester. As you will read in this month’s newsletter, there are so many great things happening in the College of Science.
Please join me in extending my early congratulations to our spring 2023 graduates. I look forward to seeing you and your families inside the McKale Center at the College of Science Convocation Ceremony on Friday, May 12. As you continue your journey beyond the College of Science, I encourage you to continue to learn, explore, and discover. I hope you will stay in touch with our community no matter where your path takes you next. You are a Wildcat for life!
I am excited to recognize three outstanding groups of Wildcats from the College of Science. Departments throughout the College have nominated students for the Outstanding Senior Award as well as the Excellence in Undergraduate Research Award. We will celebrate these exemplary students at an awards banquet in May. Additionally, the Outstanding Graduate Student Research Awards in Scholarship, Service, and Teaching have been announced and were celebrated at a gathering on April 24. The undergrad and graduate students selected for these awards are tremendous ambassadors for our science community, and I commend you all for your passion and perseverance.
Among eight total University of Arizona graduate students selected for the prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program, the College of Science had five current graduate students. The recipients this semester are Brianna Billingsley and Nicolas Deshler from Physics and Astronomy, Savannah Fuqua from Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Eric Lu from Molecular & Cellular Biology, and Sheila Whitman from Applied Mathematics. Additionally, two other students from the College of Science were selected as Honorable Mentions: Liam O'Connor (Geochemistry) and Megan Nickerson(Environmental Biology). Congratulations on this outstanding achievement!
Wishing you all the best as we near the conclusion of the semester.
Sincerely,
Carmie Garzione
Dean, College of Science
