Samuel Dahl, Hydrology & Atmospheric Sciences

This spring, departments in the University of Arizona's College of Science nominated an outstanding senior who went above and beyond during their time as a Wildcat. We are pleased to share their stories as they reflect on their time at UArizona. Next in the senior spotlight series is Samuel Dahl from the department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences.

Samuel Dahl
Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences

College of Science: Why did you choose your area of study?
Dahl: I have always been a lover of the weather! From an early age I was interested in observing the phenomena in our atmosphere. Picking the HAS major here at the U of A was a natural fit. Additionally, the grand issue of the climate crisis is exceptionally relevant, and I am privileged to have the opportunity to be a small part of addressing it. The Sonoran Desert is a particular region with lots of unique atmospheric and water related problems to explore!

COS: Tell us about a class or research project you really enjoyed
Dahl: Over the past couple of years, I have been researching the role of continental weather systems on hurricane rapid intensification in the Gulf of Mexico with Dr. Eyad Atallah. The hope is that the findings can inform more accurate prediction of landfalling hurricanes in the Southeast. Tropical meteorology is a particular area of interest for me, and it has been great to be involved with work that can be so impactful on protecting life and property.

COS: What is one specific memory from your time at UA that you'll cherish forever?
Dahl: I have to say that my time here has been full of major life-altering events, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the tragic events in the HAS department during the past year. Rather than pinpoint a specific event, I think it is more meaningful to simply acknowledge the wonderful and supportive people who I have crossed paths with. This includes the HAS faculty, staff and students, as well as Erin Deely and the Science Ambassador team. I am grateful to know and interact with all of them.

COS: What is next for you after graduation?
Dahl: I’ll be taking the summer and fall off to get some much-needed rest and I hope to do some significant traveling! After that, I’ll be returning to the U of A to continue my Master’s in Atmospheric Science.
