Feryal Özel

Associate Dean, Research

Dr. Feryal Özel was named the College of Science’s Associate Dean for Research in January of 2022. She is a Professor of Astronomy and Physics at the University of Arizona and received her BS from Columbia University, her MS from the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, and her PhD in Astrophysics from Harvard University.

Dr. Özel was a NASA Hubble fellow and member at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton prior to joining our faculty. She has done pioneering work on the measurement of neutron star radii, which led to new constraints on the equation of state of cold ultra-dense matter, and on the first simulations of the images of low-luminosity black holes that guided the development of interferometric imaging efforts of the Event Horizon Telescope.
